TRACING MY TWIGS ON THE FAMILY TREE JODIE PILLIUS-GOEBEL

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NEW YORK
|
Many members of my family, both paternal and maternal, ended up in Sullivan County, New York. Much of my research is conducted in and around that region. I am researching the following surnames in the Sullivan County area: GORTON, FINKLE, ROSS, BLACK, PORTER, DAVENPORT, COVENTRY, GROSS, EHERTS, KING, BRODT, and VAN BUREN (The Van Burens appear to be mostly from Ulster county).

My g-g-g grandfather, James Davenport Gorton, served in the 143d N.Y.V.I., Company C, during the War Between the States.
The 143d was Sullivan County's own, and was comprised almost entirely of Sullivan County men. The regiment left Camp Holley (Kiamesha) on October 8, 1862, and entered into the war. They traveled to Virginia, to fight in the lines in front of Richmond in June, 1863. In November, 1863, they fought in the Battle of Missionary Ridge and May, 1864, the Battle of Resaca and Pumpkin Vine Creek. The 143d marched on and in September, 1864, were part of the Siege of Atlanta and Sherman's March to the Sea.
